Even with expedited renewal, getting a new passport can still take several weeks if yours has expired or is close to expiring. So, what happens when you've already booked a trip? Or what if you're traveling, and your passport is nearing expiration? In most cases, you won't be able to cross international borders if your passport has expired. Our friends at AirAdvisor have written this essential guide to help you navigate such a scenario and explain your options.
Why Do We Need Passports?
As a traveler, you probably know the panic that sets in when you realize your passport is missing. But why do we even need them? After World War II, passports became standardized by organizations like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure security, prevent identity fraud, and track migration. Despite the inconvenience, these documents are crucial for maintaining international security and peace.
Booking International Travel with an Expiring Passport
If your passport renewal hasn't arrived yet, you might be wondering if you can still book your holiday. Whilst you can, keep in mind that boarding your flight might not be possible without a valid passport. The rules depend on both the country you're visiting and the airline's policies. AirAdvisor recommends waiting until you have a renewed passport to avoid any last-minute issues.
The Role of Airlines
Airlines are responsible for ensuring passengers have the correct travel documents. If you're denied entry due to an expired passport, the airline is responsible for getting you home. Some carriers require passport information at booking, while others check at boarding. Without a valid passport, you risk being denied boarding.
How Long Does It Take to Renew Your Passport?
Renewing a passport can take weeks, even with expedited services. Check with your country’s passport office for specific processing times. AirAdvisor advises planning well in advance and exploring expedited or emergency services if necessary.
Passport Validity Requirements
While most countries like the US, UK, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada only require your passport to be valid while you’re visiting, others may require it to be valid for a certain period of time beyond the dates you intend to travel.
The vast majority of Schengen Area countries, for example, require this document to be valid for 3-months past your departure date. Not only that, but it must have been issued within the last 10 years.
Other countries require a 3 or 6 month validity periodpast your entry date, and yet another group requires 3 or 6 months beyond your entry AND departure dates. So, check these requirements for your destination country before you plan your trip.
Traveling with an Expired Passport
Generally, you cannot travel internationally with an expired passport, but there are exceptions. For example, citizens of certain European countries may be allowed to return home with an expired passport under specific conditions.
How to Return Home with an Expired Passport
If you find yourself needing to return home with an expired passport, AirAdvisor recommends these steps:
Contact Your Embassy or Consulate: They can provide guidance and possibly issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD).
Gather Necessary Documents: You'll need your expired passport, an additional ID, and proof of travel.
Notify the Airline: Inform the airline about your situation once you have the necessary documentation.
Prepare for Border Control: Be ready for additional questioning upon arrival.
Will Passports Become Obsolete?
With advances in technology, digital and biometric identity systems may reduce dependence on physical passports. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES), expected to launch in 2024, could make border crossing faster and more secure. However, AirAdvisor notes that physical passports aren't going away just yet.
