Emirates is on the path to becoming the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™, a milestone that reflects its commitment to making air travel more inclusive and accessible. This designation, set to be formally awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), signifies a major step forward for travelers with autism and sensory sensitivities. By early 2025, more than 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff will have completed specialized training, with additional services and standards to be announced throughout the year.
Enhancing Accessibility in Air Travel
For many individuals on the autism spectrum, air travel can be an overwhelming experience due to sensory challenges. A survey by AutismTravel.com found that 78% of families are hesitant to travel, and 94% would take more trips if they knew staff were autism-trained. Emirates’ initiative supports these families while aligning with Dubai’s goal of becoming the most accessible destination globally.
What Is the Autism Certified Airline™ Designation?
The Autism Certified Airline™ designation is awarded to airlines that meet stringent standards for supporting passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities. Emirates partnered with IBCCES to conduct in-depth research, including surveys of over 14,000 individuals with various disabilities, feedback from 1,200 industry professionals, and audits of Emirates flights. The result is a data-driven approach to creating new standards in aviation, addressing every stage of the journey from check-in to in-flight services.
Comprehensive Staff Training
As part of the certification, Emirates staff are undergoing extensive autism and sensory-awareness training. This program equips crew and ground personnel with the skills to better understand and support neurodiverse travelers. Building on the “Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities” training completed by 23,000 staff in 2023, the new curriculum focuses on recognizing sensory triggers, understanding individual needs, and creating a welcoming experience for all.
New Services for Travelers with Autism
Starting in 2025, Emirates will roll out a series of new services designed for travelers with sensory sensitivities. These include:
Sensory Guides: Digital resources to help passengers plan their journey by providing information on sensory environments at airports and onboard.
Sensory Products: Items like fidget toys and stress aids to enhance comfort during flights.
These initiatives aim to reduce travel anxiety and provide a smoother experience for both passengers on the spectrum and their companions.
Collaboration for Accessible Travel
Emirates is working closely with Dubai Airports, Dubai Tourism, and other partners to further accessible travel initiatives. In December 2023, Dubai International Airport became the first international airport to achieve Certified Autism Center™ status. Together, these organizations aim to make Dubai the first Certified Autism Destination™ in the Eastern Hemisphere.
